Book Review by Miss T: The umbrella mouse by Anna Fargher

Book review by Miss T, aged 10

The umbrella mouse is an amazing book for multiple reasons. The characters are very likeable and you get attached to them right from the beginning. The main character is a mouse called Pip. However, when her house gets destroyed in the war, she tries to escape and go to her home in Italy. She has a special umbrella that she wants to keep safe. It was where she lived in the umbrella shop. It had always been very special to her and her family but when a bomb lands on top of the umbrella shop, she wants to go to Italy to an umbrella museum where the rest of her family lives. Along the way she meets some new friends and has very interesting adventures. All she wants to do is be able to stay somewhere safe – with her family in Italy – and wants her friends to be safe in the war. The book is very interesting and is very hard to put down once you start reading it. After the book had ended all I wanted to do was find out all of the other adventures Pip and her friends go on. The book is set in World War 2 and the animals all want to be free and live in peace.

I really liked the cover. It is hard to tell it is set in the war just from the cover, however, it shows Pip with her umbrella which is special to Pip. The scene also shows Pip across London which is where quite a bit of the book is set at the beginning. It also represents how Pip is looking behind back at London as she drifts away to try and find a safe place to stay.
