Mario Kart 8 Challenge: Design your own racing track

Following the recent launch of Mario Kart 8, we've been taking part in a series of Mario themed challenges. Our first challenge was to design our own Mario Karts and you can read about that here. So here we are for our second challenge which is to design our own racing track.

We all brainstormed ideas as a family. The boys had the idea of making the track Octagon shaped because Octagons have 8 sides and 8 corners and as we are celebrating the launch of Mario Kart 8 - the number 8 was important!

Mum liked the idea of using a rainbow coloured road like the rainbow roads already featuring in certain races.
Using the 7 wonders of the world for inspiration
For the overall theme we decided upon the 8 Wonders of the World. We took the 7 of the worlds wonders and added our own Mario themed 8th wonder. Each of the 8 sections of the Octagon shaped track would be themed as one of the wonders. Players would face obstacles and terrain corresponding to that 'wonder':

The great wall of China: Bumpy terrain like you are going over the steps

The Grand Canyon: Jumping the canyon and avoiding falling rocks

Stongehenge: Weaving through the stones at stonehenge

Mount Everest: Skiding and sliding on Mount Everest whilst being hit by snowballs and ice.

The Taj Mahal: Driving through the water at the Taj Mahal.

The Pyramids of Egypt: Swerving through the pyramids of Egypt and through sand dunes and sandstorms.

The Leaning Tower of Pisa: Driving round and round the tower to drive up it whilst being hit by Pizzas!

And finally our 8th Wonder of the World inspired by Mario himself...Instead of Mount Rushmore, we give you Mario Rushmore. With famous Mario characters carved into the rock face instead of famous presidents.

D worked hard on building the track, with a little help from Miss T (who was trying to pinch our rainbow road ribbon!):
